Book Therapy

Petra Caudr turned her passion for books and design into a thriving business. Today, her vision inspires and heals.

Petra Caudr has been an avid reader since childhood. And her lifelong love of reading has shaped her appreciation for beauty, fashion, and travel. When she opened the first Book Therapy store, she envisioned an oasis of calm in bustling Prague. She created a haven where customers could escape, unwind, and lose themselves in a good book — sometimes even after hours.

The store offers a curated selection of lifestyle and travel titles, non-fiction works, and novels. Customers can immerse themselves in books, magazines, and investment pieces within the distinctively designed interiors in Prague and Brno. Book Therapy has also gained fame for its Evenings at Book Therapy events. During these special nights, guests are welcomed by staff who introduce the store, play a carefully selected playlist, and open a bottle of exquisite wine. Then, for two and a half hours, customers are left alone to enjoy the books in private. This concept turns every book lover’s dream into reality.

Capturing Local Character

“Since we live in Vinohrady and have fallen in love with it, we knew from the start that this district would be perfect for Book Therapy,” explains the owner, who decided to expand her business to Moravia after her success in Prague. Both branches showcase her passion for refined aesthetics, elegance, and distinctive presentation of quality books. At the same time, each store carries its own atmosphere. While Římská 35 in Prague stands out with its high ceilings, the Brno store at Zelný trh captivates with the spirit of the place and its history.

Prague’s Book Therapy store

“In the past, this space housed a bakery, and we had to remove flour from the tiles when we moved in,” she reveals. The entrepreneur accentuated the original interior with dried flowers placed on the ceilings. She decided to preserve the space’s appearance, respecting its historical context and minimalist design. “I soon realized that the books stand out just as well against the white-tiled walls in Brno as they do against the black paint in our Prague boutique,” she adds. Besides the interior’s authenticity, she also sees an advantage in its strategic location. “The Brno branch is situated in an inner courtyard, allowing us to host various events, including book launches,” she notes.

Outward Bound, Inward Focused

According to the owner, a book must be interesting in both its presentation and content. It’s not enough for customers to be attracted solely by an appealing cover design. “What’s crucial is the added value that readers take away from each title we offer,” she clarifies. As a result, the original selection of so-called coffee table books soon expanded to include self-help books and non-fiction reads. “We must constantly respond to current events and people’s moods. That’s why we’ve reflected the needs of customers who, especially during the pandemic and the onset of the war in Ukraine, wanted to learn more about these situations,” Petra Caudr explains.

Personally, she prefers books with travel photography, which allow her to visit various places around the world from anywhere, at any time. That is one of the reasons why she’s proud of her latest collaboration with the French publisher Assouline. “I was captivated by the perfect craftsmanship of their books,” she says. Beyond their top-notch quality, the collection immediately catches the eye with its playful, colorful bindings that become ornaments on any shelf or in any interior.

Travel enthusiasts will be drawn to the Travel Series edition with its high-quality photo reproductions that perfectly capture the mood and atmosphere of various corners of the world. “The book Sicily Honor is a prime example — it exudes the scents and flavors of this Italian island, making you feel an urge to go there immediately,” Petra Caudr describes. In addition to these captivating travel books, Book Therapy sets itself apart with its offering of investment books, which are limited edition, numbered titles whose value increases over time.

Styling Spaces with Stories

Although recent events have taught the bookstore owner to avoid planning too far ahead, she has a new project on her mind. Following the philosophy of the kindness economy — a desire to grow while giving back — which Book Therapy embraces, she wants to share her business insights. “A client comes to us with an idea, and we help them fine-tune their interior with books,” reveals Petra Caudr.

Her years of experience will now be reflected in the interiors of homes, offices, and real estate development projects. And she believes that with a pinch of imagination and creativity, she can use books to transform any space into a unique and warm environment. “Books are not just practical accessories, but also a source of coziness, inspiration, and personal expression,” shares the founder.
